The most useful interior tips

Layer your lighting

Great interiors have a variety of layered lighting that can be individually controlled for different times of the day, events or moods.

Most rooms require three types of lighting: general, accent, and task. Ambient or general lighting illuminates a room in a fairly uniform manner.

Rearrange the bookshelves

Organize 60 percent of books vertically and 40 percent horizontally on the shelves. This creates balance yet spontaneity (and shows off the back of the bookshelf if it’s lined with a decorative fabric). Stack horizontal books lower than vertical ones: If the vertical books are 12 inches tall, place three to four books horizontally up to four inches high. Add green plants to soften the bookshelf, but avoid flowers, which can look cluttered and distracting.

How to create the interior design in the loft style

High ceiling

The advantange of the lofts is that having a high ceiling and we can enjoy all the space we have.

Simple window treatments

The view takes center stage in an urban loft. Ensure your window treatments don’t interfere with the view by choosing simple sheer fabric or sheer blinds for covering. Depending on the height of your home and privacy issues you may not need window treatments. For homes with tall windows consider motorized treatments that are remote controlled.

Interior Design Tricks

  • Use decorative mirrors to add instant light to your living space

As seen above, mirrors can also be used to make a small space feel larger. For larger rooms, or any room with a more limited amount of natural light, mirrors placed directly across from the windows, will add instant light. Decorative mirrors can also be used in lieu of art to fill empty wall space. Large or small, mirrors add light and dimension to your living space.

    Swatch your paint

Before you commit to a wall colour, it's important to paint a swatch and observe how the shade looks in different light conditions. For a mess-free method, paint swatches on scraps of cardboard and move them around the room throughout the day, observing how they look in different corners of the space.
